CREDIT SECURITY FREEZE. The New York State "Security Freeze Law" went in to effect November 1, 2006. This law allows individual consumers to put a freeze on all new credit, loan and mortgage applications in their name, thereby blocking identity thieves from gaining access to their credit reports. Finally you can protect yourself from identity theft simply by writing a request to each of the three credit agencies (Equifax Experian, and Transunion).
